Important Deadline Reminder Issued by IRS for Certain Taxpayers in Alabama

If you’re residing in certain areas of Alabama, it’s essential to keep in mind an upcoming tax deadline.

Residents of Autauga, Barbour, Chambers, Conecuh, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Greene, Hale, Mobile, Morgan, Sumter, and Tallapoosa counties in Alabama have until Oct. 16 to file their taxes. This deadline was extended due to the severe storms and tornadoes that began on Jan. 12, which forced the postponement of the original deadline of April 18. Taxpayers in these counties should take advantage of this extension and ensure they file their taxes before the deadline.

The extension pertains to the tax returns and payments, giving taxpayers more time to comply with their obligations.

Due to recent storms, tax deadlines in nine Georgia counties, including Butts, Crisp, Henry, Jasper, Meriwether, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Troup, have been extended to October 16th. Additionally, 55 counties in California also have an extended deadline due to three separate disaster declarations from the Federal Emergency Management Agency covering different events.

Those who are eligible for the October 16 deadline include:

  • 2022 individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 18.
  • For eligible taxpayers, 2022 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts.
  • Quarterly estimated tax payments normally due on April 18, June 15 and Sept. 15.
  • Calendar-year 2022 partnership and S corporation returns normally due on March 15.
  • Calendar-year 2022 corporate and fiduciary income tax returns and payments normally due on April 18.
  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on May 1 and July 31.
  • Calendar-year 2022 returns filed by tax-exempt organizations normally due on May 15.

If you happen to have an address of record listed in the disaster area, the IRS will provide automatic filing and penalty relief without any need for you to contact them. However, if you do receive a notice for late filing or late penalty, you should get in touch with the IRS by using the number listed on the notice.
