Capital City Singing Comes Back to the City of Montgomery

At Old Alabama Town today, people were singing beautifully.

The Capital City Shape Note Singing was held in central Montgomery. It was put on by the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture and the Alabama Folklife Association. During the day-long event, traditional singers from all over Alabama sang songs from shape note hymn books printed in Alabama, such as “The Sacred Harp.”

Annemarie Anderson, who runs the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, said, “We have people from all over Alabama, usually this one is a little smaller,” “Our rotundum singing which we hold in the Archives in February, brings people from all over the state.”

The first Capital City Singing was in 1986, and today is the first time since 2019 that it has been held again. The music event is open to anyone who wants to join in or just watch.

In the Shape Note for the Capital City Today, the singing began at 9:30 a.m. and went on until around 3 p.m.
