Regrettably, Alabama has not been spared from the recent wave of layoffs affecting the United States.
Baxter International, which is a medical device manufacturer based in Alabama, has recently announced that it will be shutting down its Opelika plant. This move will result in the loss of nearly 500 jobs. The plant is located about 60 miles northeast of Montgomery, and its closure will have a significant impact on the local economy. It is unfortunate news for the affected employees and the community as a whole.
According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, any company that has over 100 full-time employees is required to give a notice of 60 days prior to laying off 50 or more workers at a specific location.
Baxter Healthcare recently announced to the Alabama Department of Commerce that 459 jobs will be lost as a result of the shutdown of their manufacturing plant in Opelika on November 30.
The announcement has dealt a severe blow to the community in the area.
Mayor Gary Fuller has expressed his determination to help the employees affected by the plant closing in East Alabama. He has stated that the City and the Economic Development team will collaborate with Baxter, the Alabama Department of Commerce, the Opelika Chamber, Southern Union, and other workforce partners to assist the employees in finding other careers within the area.
