The latest information on a deadly mosquito-borne sickness in Alabama is concerning.
The Alabama Department of Public Health issued an alert earlier this week about the virus, known as EEE.
According to the health department, EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) can result in “severe illness and death.” There is also no vaccination or treatment.

According to Newsweek, “a 7-year-old second-grader at Spanish Fort Elementary” was the victim of this dreadful illness.
There has been no update on the other EEE case in Baldwin County, but the CDC warns that even those who survive might suffer from “long-term physical or mental impairments,” such as seizures, paralysis, and personality abnormalities.

First and foremost, keep in mind that this sickness is quite unusual. In their report, the Alabama Department of Public Health stated this.
They also listed other preventative steps that we can take, such as:
- Wearing long sleeves and pants
- Using bug spray
- Using air conditioning or screens on windows and doors
- Emptying outside objects that can hold standing water
