A non-profit organization holds a community debate on the planned Montgomery youth curfew.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In Montgomery, people are talking about the idea of putting a curfew on all of the city’s teens. At Destiny Driven Inc.’s community discussion on Wednesday night, many people shared their thoughts.

Some people say they think curfews are needed to stop young people from getting into trouble and to give the community more order.

Aaron Fullard, a student at LAMP High School, said, “A curfew can be a powerful tool if it is well thought out and enforced.”

Other people say that citywide curfews wouldn’t work and would instead lead to fights between cops and young people.

“Children nowadays are suffering from mental health issues, maybe not coming from stable households and things of that sort,” said Carver High School junior Zyasia Belser.

Adults at the community discussion were also split on the decision. Some said, “A curfew would be great,” but others said that kids who were out past curfew shouldn’t get harsh punishments.

Tobarie Burton said, “A lot of these modern-day parents have gotten soft.”

Both Belser and Fullard said they want to get their friends to come to a Montgomery City Council meeting to speak out for or against the curfew.
