The man charged with the 2022 murder of Edmond Officer Sergeant C.J. Nelson, according to his counsel, has passed away.
Nelson and three other vehicles were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Broadway and Comfort Drive on Tuesday, July 20, 2022. At that moment, a utility truck traveling at an undetermined speed collided with Nelson’s motorcycle and the three other vehicles, according to officials.
The motorcycle of the husband and father of two was wedged between a white lorry and another vehicle. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Jay Fite, age 55, was accused with manslaughter in the first degree. According to authorities, he was operating the vehicle that fatally struck Sergeant Nelson. Reportedly, he was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the collision.
His attorney states that Fite was recently released from detention on medical bond due to his deteriorating health. Fite’s demise was verified by his attorney on Tuesday. At this time, the precise cause of his demise is unknown.
