A judge has ordered the hospitalization of a preteen suspect who is suspected of committing a deadly attempted carjacking.
Late in October, the 12-year-old and a 13-year-old allegedly attempted to abduct an off-duty federal security officer, according to the police. The 13-year-old, who was subsequently identified as Vernard Toney, Jr., was shot and killed by the driver, according to authorities.
A status hearing for the 12-year-old alleged accomplice was conducted on Monday. The boy’s mother surrendered him to law enforcement last week after the Metropolitan Police Department distributed images of him in an attempt to locate him.
A defense counsel for the suspect requested his release to his mother during the hearing. In exchange, the mother assured him of constant supervision, excluding school hours. On the night of the fatal gunshot, he was allegedly under her supervision, the prosecution argued in opposition.
