Police in Montgomery, Alabama, have caught an 8-year-old boy who they say stole from a man with a gun and then led them on a high-speed chase.
The North Carolina Beat got a picture from Facebook this morning of a woman saying that the man who was robbed was her father. Ebony Shackleford wrote in a now-deleted post, “Why an 11yr old just rob my daddy with a 9mm gun by Beauty and Beyond on Fairview getting out his SUV. Don took the car and crashed.” Officials later found out that the child was only 8 years old.
Montgomery Police said in an email that they were called to West Fairview Avenue and South Court Street around 11 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a car theft. Major Saba Coleman said that soon after police got to the scene, they tried to stop the car that was said to have been stolen. But the 8-year-old driver wouldn’t stop, so a chase started. After that, the 8-year-old hit another car.
Major Coleman said that the 8-year-old was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, trying to get away, and being a person who shouldn’t have a gun. He was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility for Young People.
The gun was found at the scene, and the police say the child was armed.
“Snake” Knapp, a person who saw what happened, told local reporters that he followed the 8-year-old, realized it was a child driving, and called the police. Snake said that he had to call the cops because he didn’t want this little boy to hurt anyone.
I didn’t want him driving all over Montgomery, causing more accidents or hurting himself or hurting other people, he said.
