The highly anticipated Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University is just around the corner, scheduled for Oct. 28. However, Alabama A&M has recently taken issue with the Alabama Sports Counsel, who oversees the event, for using their branding without permission. As a result, Alabama A&M has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the organization.
Perren King, the executive director of the Magic City Classic, has confirmed that the annual game will proceed as scheduled, despite the recent announcement of Alabama A&M University’s cancellation of their homecoming festivities.
According to King’s statement to WBRC, the Alabama Sports Council chairperson recently received a letter that caught them off guard. It has only been 24 hours since they received the letter, but they are already working as a team to address the confusion and obtain clarity on the matter. Despite this unexpected development, the Magic City Classic is still set to proceed as planned.
Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has made a demand to the Alabama State University (ASU) to provide access to all books and records for inspection and auditing. This demand is in relation to the revenue generated and compensation paid under the management agreement between ASC, A&M and ASU. Earlier this year, AAMU formed a task force to look into the matter regarding the classic game, as reported by HBCU Game Day.
According to King, our team values every question or concern that comes our way. We are taking the necessary measures to ensure that we clarify any doubts and proceed with the event as planned. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has also contacted Alabama A&M President Daniel K. Wims to ensure that everything is on track for the event.
Mayor Woodfin expressed his disappointment with the way the correspondence was handled by reaching out to President Wims. According to him, the timing of the situation is crucial, given that the Classic is only five weeks away. He believes that such a form of communication does not reflect the good faith or relationship between the two parties. The back-and-forth exchange only hurts the brand of the Classic, which has been built for more than 80 years. Mayor Woodfin emphasized that alumni from both institutions deserve a Classic that everyone can be proud of.
