Former General Hospital star Elizabeth MacRae has passed away at the age of 88.
The soap star, according to Deadline, tragically passed away on Monday, May 27, in her hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina.
According to Jim MacRae, the nephew of MacRae, he stated in an interview with local North Carolina outlet City View that his aunt had a remarkable life. He described her as intelligent and eloquent, noting that she was still receiving fan mail at Highland House.
“It’s a somber moment, but she has passed away. She lived a remarkable life. The final few years were challenging, but now she is reunited with my beloved dad, whom she cherished dearly, as well as her parents, sister, and husband. She truly had a fulfilling and meaningful life.”
The actress leaves behind five stepchildren, namely Terry Halsey, Peter Halsey, Hugh Halsey, Cate Halsey, and Alex Halsey Topper.
MacRae began her acting journey in the late 1950s when she made her first television appearance in 1958 on “The Verdict Is Yours.” Over the next 25 years, she graced the small screen with her talent, appearing in popular shows like “Route 66,” “The Fugitive,” “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” and “I Dream of Jeannie,” to name a few.
In the mid-1960s, she gained recognition for her role as Lou-Ann Poovie in the popular TV series “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” This recurring role made her famous and allowed her to showcase her acting skills. From 1966 to 1969, she captivated audiences with her portrayal of Lou-Ann. Additionally, in 1967, she made a memorable appearance as Betty Parker on “The Andy Griffith Show.” These roles cemented her status as a talented actress in the entertainment industry.

Additionally, she appeared as Agatha Dobson on “Guiding Light” from 1983 to 1984.
In her film career, MacRae collaborated with director Frances Ford Coppola for the 1974 film The Conversation, where she played the role of Meredith.

She and her late husband, Charles Day Halsey, Jr., who passed away earlier this year at the age of 96, eventually returned to North Carolina. MacRae and Halsey Jr. had tied the knot in 1969.
In 2011, MacRae showcased her acting skills by lending her voice to various characters in the animated series, “Supernatural: The Animation.”
In her obituary, it was stated that the actress generously donated a collection of items that documented her illustrious acting career to the University of North Carolina — Chapel Hill’s Southern Historical Collection. MacRae’s outstanding contributions to the performing arts were recognized in March 2023 when she was inducted into the Fayetteville Performing Arts Hall of Fame.
