NEW YORK — A woman who drove intoxicated through an NYPD checkpoint, struck and killed a New York City police detective, was given a sentence of more than 20 years in jail on Wednesday.
In October, a jury found Jessica Beauvais, 35, of Hempstead guilty of several counts, including aggravated manslaughter. In April 2021, she was taken into custody when 43-year-old Anastasios Tsakos passed away.
Tsakos, a father of two and a 14-year police department veteran, was struck and murdered on April 27, 2021, at around two in the morning, as he was helping policemen at the scene of another tragic incident on the Queens Long Island Expressway.
Two hours after the collision, Beauvais’ blood alcohol content was almost double the permitted limit for driving, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. She also lacked a valid driver’s license.
Katz stated in a news release on Wednesday that “her license had been suspended, she was drunk, and she had smoked marijuana.” “The defendant should not have been behind the wheel of a car for the sake of everyone’s safety and wellbeing, including her own.”
Beauvais was given concurrent terms of 20 years in prison for aggravated manslaughter and 2 1/3 years to 7 years for fleeing the scene of an incident by a justice of the Supreme Court.
