Investigation errors lead to release of suspect in Metro platform murder case

Mocobizscene- The family is heartbroken upon discovering that the man responsible for their loved one’s death will soon be released from jail due to purported errors made during the investigation. During the preliminary hearing, LaKeitha Golden, the victim’s mother, expressed her belief that the case against Wilson appeared to be strong.

“I paid close attention to the medical examiner, the Metro Transit officer, and the female witness,” she stated. “I made sure to carefully listen to all of their accounts.”

She also observed the footage from the security camera.

“It was heartbreaking to witness him using every ounce of his remaining strength to identify his assailant, only to crumble in front of the attendant station,” she expressed with a heavy heart.

Just a few days before the start of the jury trial last month, the family received news that the prosecutor and Wilson’s defense attorney had come to a plea agreement. According to the agreement, Wilson would plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter through an Alford plea and would be released from jail, having served less than four years.

Charlene Thompson, the grandmother of Golden, expressed her disbelief when her son informed her about the possibility of him receiving time served. She couldn’t comprehend the idea and found it difficult to accept.

According to the family, prosecutors cited numerous issues with the case as the reason for not proceeding with a trial and risking a potential acquittal. According to court documents, the blame for significant lapses in the investigation primarily falls on Metro Transit Police, as stated by prosecutors.

The swab taken to check Wilson’s DNA against the knife was not properly accounted for when it was stored at the evidence facility, according to the assistant commonwealth’s attorney. The prosecutor criticized the investigation, stating that it was filled with numerous shortcomings. They pointed out the poor quality of the investigation and the lack of disclosure to the commonwealth.

According to a recent inspector general report, crimes including robberies and kidnappings were not adequately documented and, in some instances, were not even investigated by Metro Transit Police between 2010 and 2017.

We have contacted Metro Transit Police and are currently awaiting their response, according to News4.

According to Wilson’s attorney, he believes that his client acted in self-defense and that a manslaughter plea would be suitable in this case. In his court filings, he also pointed out several other manslaughter cases where the sentences varied from three to eight years.
