Two individuals arrested in connection with the killing of a volunteer at LA Summer Night Lights

Mocobizscene- In July, a volunteer with Los Angeles’ Summer Night Lights program at a recreation center was tragically shot and killed. Recently, two San Pedro men, one of whom was a fugitive found in Mexico, have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with this incident.

Jose Quezada, a 46-year-old resident of Carson, tragically lost his life on July 27 at approximately 10 p.m. The incident occurred during a Summer Night Lights event held at the Wilmington Recreation Center located in the 300 block of North Neptune Avenue. At the time, Quezada was selflessly volunteering as a cook for the event. This gathering was part of a larger program aimed at curbing gang violence and transforming Los Angeles’ parks and recreation centers into secure environments for families to enjoy.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the individuals involved in the incident have been identified as Sergio Esteban, 28, and Estevan Hernandez, 27.

Esteban faced charges in December after being arrested earlier that month. Similarly, Hernandez was also charged with murder in December but managed to evade arrest until January 31st. Authorities apprehended him in Mexico with the help of the LAPD and FBI Fugitive Task Force. On February 1st, the LAPD handed him over to the task force, who promptly booked him on suspicion of murder.

A dedicated intersection near the site of the shooting honors Quezada, who was known as a loving husband, caring father, dedicated coach, and inspiring mentor.
