Lyft driver arrested by police in DC for assaulting passenger; hate crime under investigation

Mocobizscene- The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has made an arrest in connection with an assault on a passenger by a ride-share driver. This incident is currently under investigation and is being treated as a potential hate crime.

On January 28 at approximately 10:17 a.m., a Lyft driver picked up a man in the 1800 block of Connecticut Ave. NW. While on the ride, the man politely requested the driver to lower the volume on the radio.

The suspect expressed his disapproval of the man’s energy, stating, “I don’t like your energy, it’s throwing me off, your energy offends me,” as documented in the police report.

32-year-old Tireek Myrick, from Northwest D.C., was taken into custody on Wednesday and is now facing charges of simple assault.

The MPD is currently investigating the offense with the possibility that it may be motivated by hate or bias. It is important to note that this designation is subject to change as the investigation progresses and more information is collected, as stated by the MPD.

Myrick faced a burglary charge in relation to an incident on R St. NE on Jan. 13. According to the police, Myrick did not deliver the ordered food, resulting in the victims canceling their order.
