Allegations of medical examiner investigator stealing credit card information from deceased residents

Mocobizscene- Darrell Fernando Reid, a 38-year-old resident of Pembroke Pines, was taken into custody on January 19th. As per the Broward County online court records, Reid faces charges including three counts of criminal use of a deceased individual’s identification and one count of fraudulent use of a credit card.

Reid, a former investigator with the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office, allegedly stole the credit card of a deceased person and used it to make unauthorized charges of around $450, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, his role at the medical examiner’s office involved documenting scenes through photography. He joined the office on April 17, 2023, and did not come into direct contact with any victims’ bodies, as reported by the newspaper.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the police linked the payments to a CashApp account owned by Reid, as well as another account belonging to his girlfriend.

The arrest affidavit reveals that Reid’s CashApp account had a total of 25 credit and debit cards listed as “payment sources” from 2020 until November 8, 2023. Additionally, there were two CashApp accounts associated with Reid’s information.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, investigators found not just one, but two additional cards linked to individuals who passed away in Broward County last year. One card was connected to a victim who died on October 30, while the other was associated with a person who passed away on November 6.

According to the arrest affidavit, Reid, who was working as an investigator for the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office at the time, has been linked by police to the credit card of a man who passed away in December 2022 in New York City. The newspaper reported that this connection was made through Reid’s CashApp account.
