How a subsidy program helped a Maryland mom’s family recover after a serious crash

Mocobizscene- Montgomery County in Maryland is currently facing the challenge of high child care costs, with a recent report revealing that Washington D.C. has the highest child care expenses in the entire country. Amidst this concerning situation, a mother of three in Maryland is determined to spread awareness about government programs that offer financial assistance for child care.

Her hope is that more parents will be able to take advantage of these subsidies and alleviate the burden of child care expenses. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the average annual cost of child care in Maryland is $11,000, which is approximately the same as in Virginia. However, the cost skyrockets to $24,000 in the District.

Heather Bell explained to DC News Now that certain counties have access to a greater abundance of resources.

“I was aware that life might not appear the same after, and I knew that the road to recovery would be long,” Bell reflected.

Maryland’s Child Care Scholarship Program provided assistance in covering the expenses of caring for her children during the course of four years, while she went through multiple surgeries.

“When my daughter was three and my son was just four months old,” she shared, “I realized that there were important lessons that all mothers, regardless of age, needed to learn. It’s not just about earning money or managing it, but understanding how it all works.”
