Mocobizscene- A Lyft driver and a cousin came to the rescue when a mother unexpectedly gave birth to a baby girl inside a rideshare vehicle beneath Interstate 95 in North Miami. The incident happened during rush hour, adding an extra level of urgency to the situation.
North Miami Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams reached the scene under the overpass on Northwest 135th Street a little before 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
The mother started experiencing labor pains while she was at home and immediately contacted a Lyft driver. Urgently, she instructed the driver to speed up and rush her to the hospital.
The driver recounted the moment, saying, “She was urging me to hurry, saying ‘Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!'”
During the ride, the mother reached out to her cousin, Cherley Zamor.
Zamor quickly hopped into her car, determined to catch up to the Lyft SUV that was transporting her pregnant cousin.
Zamor recounted, “I went along with it.”
The Lyft driver knew that they wouldn’t reach the hospital in time, so he promptly pulled over beneath I-95.
Zamor quickly arrived at the overpass and hopped into the backseat of the rideshare SUV.
Zamor recounted the incident, stating, “She was simply screaming, ‘Ow, it hurts!’ That’s all.”
The Lyft driver was asked if he had ever helped deliver a baby in his car before, to which he responded, “This is actually my first time.”
Zamor, who was present at the scene, dialed 911 and provided assistance in delivering her cousin’s baby.
After the officials arrived, they swiftly transported both the mother and her daughter to Jackson North Medical Center.
Zamor expressed her gratitude for the additional assistance, despite the fact that she and the Lyft driver were the ones who physically did the strenuous work.
“He was incredibly helpful, and we are extremely grateful for his assistance,” she expressed. “Lyft should definitely show their appreciation by tipping him and acknowledging his efforts.”
The officials have reported that both patients are recovering nicely.
“We are overjoyed. Our baby girl is healthy, and that is all that matters,” Zamor exclaimed happily. “I am so proud of myself.”
