Three out of the four defendants involved in the tragic overdose death of 1-year-old Nicholas Dominici at his day care in the Bronx, New York, last autumn made an appearance in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday. This was for a pre-trial hearing, highlighting the seriousness of the case.
Renny Antonio Parra Paredes sat back in his chair, dressed in a tan prison uniform, with his hands cuffed and ankles shackled, while his attorney, John Francis Kaley, made a case for a bail application. Kaley argued that his client posed no threat to the community and was not likely to flee.
Carlisto Brito was escorted into the courtroom with great caution, as reported by Fox News.
According to the government, Parra Paredes posed a threat to the community as he had been involved in the production and packaging of drugs for a minimum of six months prior to his arrest. They further claimed that he had even fallen ill multiple times due to drug consumption. Furthermore, the government argued that the unfortunate incident at the day care center would not have deterred his illegal activities.
The government claimed that Parra Paredes, a father with children in the Dominican Republic, posed a risk of fleeing, and the sole reason for his delayed escape was his lack of awareness about the authorities’ search for him.

Rakoff denied the bail application after considering arguments from both sides. He expressed concern that Parra Paredes still posed a threat to the community and had a high risk of fleeing.
Parra Paredes, along with his three co-defendants – Carlisto Acevedo Brito, Felix Herrera Garcia, and Grei Mendez – are currently facing charges related to the distribution and possession of narcotics resulting in death.
