Mocobizscene- Homicide Detectives from the Orange County division are currently investigating the mysterious death of an inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Orange County. The incident took place on Saturday, January 6th, and is being treated as a homicide, according to officials.
Son Tran, who had been serving a 50-year-to-life sentence at the Monterey County prison since 2001, was found unresponsive in his cell at around 11:40 a.m. Prison staff discovered him and he was pronounced dead by medical staff, as confirmed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The authorities are considering another inmate, who was seen entering the victim’s cell earlier that day, as a suspect.
Fortunately, no other staff members at the facility were injured. The official cause of death has not been confirmed by the coroner’s office as of Saturday evening, as the investigation is still ongoing.
John Lydon, a 50-year-old inmate, is believed to be the primary suspect in the case. In 2001, he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Subsequently, he was found guilty of two additional counts of murder while incarcerated, which resulted in a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
Following the investigation by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office and Detectives, Lydon, who hails from Los Angeles County, was transferred to restricted housing. As a result, the prison implemented stricter measures and increased security protocols.
