Mocobizscene-After a hit-and-run motorist in South L.A. killed her family on New Year’s Eve, a toddler is struggling for her life.
Jose Manuel Pasgagasa, 49, Luisa Arenas, 26, and their two daughters, Mia, 5, and Hanna, 1, were named as the victims. On New Year’s Eve, at around 11:20 p.m., the family of four was driving near the junction of Normandie Avenue and 60th Street in the Harvard Park area.
The family’s car was struck by a speeding SUV driven by a fleeing suspect in an earlier hit-and-run incident after the driver broke a stop sign.
According to Los Angeles police, the father died instantly upon impact. After being taken to the hospital, the mother and 5-year-old Mia passed away from their serious injuries. Hanna, who is one year old, is the only survivor who is still being treated in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Both cars were totaled, and debris was scattered all over the road in the horrific aftermath seen on camera.
According to Sgt. Ryan Moreno of the LAPD’s South Traffic Division, “the collision was so violent, with so much force that it sent that vehicle onto the southwest corner [of the intersection], knocking over the street sign, the fence.”
When they heard the collision, several kindhearted people were spotted rushing to the family’s aid as smoke began to emerge from the vehicle. The crash sounded like an explosion, according to witnesses.
Just a year prior, the four-member family had relocated from Colombia to Los Angeles. Police are collaborating with family members overseas, particularly with regard to Hanna’s care, as she is still hospitalized but is apparently making progress. The majority of the family is in Colombia.
The family is being assisted by a GoFundMe campaign. According to authorities, a 22-year-old guy with no past criminal history is the suspect in the fatal collision. His identity remained a secret. Authorities think alcohol may have had a role in the incident, but they are still looking into what happened before it happened.
