Suspect, Montgomery Cop Shot In Weekend Standoff Identified

According to Albert, the injured officer is Jonathan Cooper, a four-year veteran of the police department who is assigned to the patrol division. Cooper sustained a gunshot wound to one of his extremities, but fortunately, it is not life-threatening. He received treatment at a local hospital and has since been discharged. However, he is still under the care of a doctor. The court documents reveal that the gunshot injury affected the officer’s left bicep.

The chief expressed gratitude to “Major Douglass” from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived at the scene promptly and quickly applied a tourniquet to the officer’s wound before he was transported to the hospital.

The police chief praised the major’s quick response, emphasizing that it significantly reduced the officer’s injuries, including minimizing blood loss. The major’s name was not disclosed.

Albert chose not to disclose the identity of the second victim. However, he did mention that this individual also sustained a non-life-threatening injury to one of their limbs. Court documents reveal that the victim was inside their personal vehicle when the suspect brandished a firearm and ordered them to exit the vehicle. Despite complying with the suspect’s demands, the victim was unfortunately shot in the leg while attempting to flee from the scene.

According to the court documents, Devonta Fuller, a 23-year-old resident of Montgomery, attempted to flee in the victim’s vehicle but was unable to do so.

Around 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the vicinity of South Panama Street near Poplar Street. The reason for the call was a report of an armed individual and gunshots being fired.

According to MPD Major Saba Coleman, they encountered Fuller when the responding officers arrived at the scene near Poplar Street and Ann Street. During the encounter, Fuller fired at one of the officers, who in turn returned fire. In a robbery attempt, Fuller also shot a man. As additional units arrived, Fuller continued shooting at the officers, injuring one of them.

As confirmed by Coleman, MPD units pursued the suspect on foot until he reached a local business in the 1100 block of Ann Street. Once inside the building, he barricaded himself.

According to Coleman, the MPD promptly mobilized additional resources to the area and took control of the scene. He emphasized that there was no immediate threat to the nearby businesses.

After being apprehended, Fuller received medical attention at a nearby hospital before being discharged. He was subsequently transferred to the Montgomery County Jail, where he faced charges of three counts of Attempted Murder and one count of Robbery first-degree. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation handles the case.
