In a heart-wrenching incident, a toddler lost their life in what appears to be an accidental shooting in Northwest Indiana on Monday evening, according to the authorities. The Merrillville police received a call and promptly arrived at a residence located in the 3100 block of West 79th Place at approximately 5:45 p.m.
The first responders on the scene were medics who wasted no time in attending to the injured party. The victim, a 3-year-old boy, received immediate medical attention in the ambulance before being taken to Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus for further treatment, according to the police.
The police declared the child deceased, according to their statement. ABC7 has been informed that the family of the young boy is currently at the hospital, receiving support from their loved ones, and understandably devastated by the situation. The family is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Ron Brewer, the husband of the child’s daycare provider, described him as a bright and intelligent young man, well beyond his years. He always had a cheerful disposition and a wonderful personality that captivated those around him. It almost seemed as if he possessed a wisdom that surpassed his age. However, today is a somber day, filled with sadness and grief.
The circumstances surrounding the boy’s shooting remain unclear. According to police, the incident appears to be accidental, but no additional information has been provided regarding the events leading up to the gunfire.
“Our team of detectives has been summoned and is currently in the process of conducting their investigation. Just like with any death investigation, we are meticulously following proper protocols to ensure accuracy and thoroughness. At this stage, it seems that the shooting is an unfortunate accident,” shared Merrillville Police Cmdr. Matthew Vasel.
According to the police, they have found a firearm at the residence where the incident took place. It seems that only one shot was fired. As of now, no one has been taken into custody, and there is no ongoing search for any individuals.
Unfortunately, additional details were not immediately accessible.
