Carlee Russell – latest: ‘Kidnap victim’ admits to lying about kidnapping, and toddler is in trouble

Carlee Russell story that she was taken after she stopped on the side of the road to help a crying child was a lie, her lawyer said in a statement.

On the evening of July 13, the 25-year-old from Alabama claimed authorities she was kidnapped after stopping to rescue a toddler in diapers who was walking alone on Interstate 459. She returned home two days after the purported kidnapping.

Her family had persisted in her narrative even when police openly questioned it.

However, Hoover Police Department Chief Nicholas Derzis stated on Monday that Ms Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, had issued a statement indicating there had been no kidnapping.

The statement in part read: “There was no kidnapping on Thursday July 13. My client did not see a baby on the side on the road.”

Earlier, CrimeStoppers backed down on a commitment to repay nearly $63,000 in donations made to help find Carlee Russell when her kidnapping claim was called into question.

During the two-day hunt for the Alabama woman, more than $63,000 was raised. However, after first promising to return the money, the organization that provides anonymous information concerning criminal activities has now stated that the money would not be repaid.
