A 52-year-old Washington D.C. resident, Avon Burke, has been sentenced to a 90-month prison term for his role in a shooting incident that injured two men in Northeast Washington, D.C. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia issued a press release on Monday, December 4, 2023, announcing the sentencing, which took place on December 1, 2023.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) jointly announced the sentencing, as stated in the press release.
In August 2023, Burke admitted guilt to two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The sentencing took place under the supervision of Judge Lynn Leibovitz, as stated in the press release.
According to the press release, the Government presented evidence that the incident took place in the alleyway behind 1355 New York Avenue NE. A dispute broke out among a group of men, with Burke being present but not directly involved in the initial altercation.
During the altercation, Burke approached the group, his arms raised and holding a silver revolver. He then proceeded to fire two rounds towards two victims, as stated in the press release.
U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith praised the Metropolitan Police Department for their diligent investigative work in solving the case, as stated in the press release.
Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin Helfand from the Major Crimes Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution of the case, as mentioned in the press release.
