On November 22, commuters at the Times Square subway station were able to catch a glimpse of the Knightscope K5 Autonomous Security Robot, which is being used by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Patrolling the streets from midnight to 6am with a two-officer NYPD escort, the 420-pound robot serves as a crime deterrent, equipped with a 360-degree camera mounted on its head.
Resembling the form of a penguin, the robot is restricted from traversing stairs, however, the live footage captured by its cameras is transmitted to the NYPD headquarters situated in the southern region of Manhattan.
The K5 robot is currently fulfilling the role of an additional set of eyes and a mobile call box. In the future, law enforcement officials plan to utilize the robot to respond to emergency calls made to 911 from within the station. This would enable them to gain a more detailed and closer perspective on the situation at hand.
