A special education assistant at Frankford High School has been detained in connection with the hit-and-run that killed a beloved barber in Philadelphia last week, according to authorities.
Sharon Seawood, 42, was charged on Monday with vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, a fatal accident, and other offenses, according to police.
According to the School District of Philadelphia, Seawood works as a special education assistant at Frankford High School. According to the district, Seawood has not reported since last Wednesday and is currently on leave.
The hit-and-run occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on March 27 in the 7900 block of Ogontz Avenue in West Oak Lane.
Police and paramedics rushed to a hit-and-run report and discovered 47-year-old Toby Bryant unconscious in the middle of the street with severe head injuries. The police say he was pronounced dead a few minutes later.
According to investigators, Bryant was crossing the street against the light last week and was not in the crosswalk when the crash occurred.
Bryant’s brother informed CBS Philadelphia that he was walking home after supper when he was fatally struck.
According to a witness, the driver continued driving for about 100–200 feet after hitting Bryant, then came to a halt, got out of the car, glanced back at the victim, and returned to the car and drove away.
Bryant was a father of four and a barber at Golden Comb, which is two blocks from the hit-and-run.
Last Wednesday, the barbershop placed a black cape over Bryant’s chair. He had worked at the barbershop for at least 15 years.
“His clientele was enormous. Bryant’s coworker, Lester Nichols, described him as having a really unusual hand. “I really considered him one of the better barbers in the city.”
