Visionary Newark Developer Marc E. Berson Passed Away at the Age of 79

The city of Newark is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its most influential figures, Marc E. Berson, who passed away on December 2, 2023, at the age of 79 after a brief illness. Berson, known for his instrumental role in revitalizing Newark, was a versatile individual, excelling in various fields such as real estate development, entrepreneurship, law, and philanthropy. He had a profound dedication to his hometown.

He left a lasting impact through his various leadership positions, such as serving as the chairman of the RWJ Barnabas Health System and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Additionally, he was a founding trustee of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). However, what brought him the most pride was his role in co-founding Opportunity Project, Inc., a non-profit organization in Millburn dedicated to supporting survivors of brain injury.

In 1981, Berson embarked on his entrepreneurial journey by establishing The Fidelco Group. This company gained recognition for its extensive property portfolio spanning across New Jersey, New York, Florida, and Ohio. Berson’s leadership played a pivotal role in Fidelco’s success, particularly in the realm of redevelopment and new construction projects. Notably, Fidelco accomplished remarkable feats, such as the acquisition and subsequent sale of Modernfold, Inc., the takeover of National Car Rental Systems, Inc., and the collaboration with Kirker Enterprises, Inc., specializing in the custom manufacturing of nail enamels and cosmetics.

Berson was a passionate philanthropist who committed himself to numerous community and non-profit endeavors. One of his notable contributions was his involvement with NJPAC, where he played a key role in identifying the Seth Boyden property in Newark as the site for the forthcoming Lionsgate film and TV studio. This project is expected to generate job opportunities and solidify New Jersey’s position as a prominent production hub. Ray Chambers, Berson’s friend and business partner, praised him for his remarkable influence in revitalizing downtown Newark.

Berson demonstrated his unwavering dedication to healthcare by actively participating in the merger of Barnabas Health and Robert Wood Johnson Health System. This collaboration, along with the partnership with Rutgers University, resulted in the establishment of New Jersey’s largest academic healthcare system. Additionally, his leadership as chairman at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey further showcased his commitment to the healthcare sector.

Berson demonstrated his commitment to education and causes that benefit young people. His philanthropic interests were diverse, as he supported organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark and the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. Before entering the business world, Berson practiced law for two decades, which provided him with a solid foundation for his subsequent achievements.

David Berson, who was born in 1944 in Newark to Norman and Ethel (Brief) Berson, had the privilege of graduating from Columbia High School. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Randi, his sister Jane (Berson) Wisner, his children Lora, Gary, and Kerri, as well as six cherished grandchildren.

The community will come together on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, NJ, to pay tribute to Marc E. Berson, a man who had a profound impact on the beloved city. The funeral service will be held to honor his life and the legacy he left behind.
