Former President Trump asserted on Monday that there are numerous possibilities for reducing funding to entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
During his first interview since President Biden’s State of the Union address last week, Trump made an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” Host Joe Kernen acknowledged the significant policy disparities between Trump and Biden, but suggested that there might not be a substantial difference in their stance on key entitlement programs.
During the interview, Kernen inquired whether Trump’s perspective on managing the entitlement programs had undergone any alterations.
According to Trump, there is a lot that can be done to address entitlements, including cutting them and addressing issues of theft and mismanagement. He believes that there are numerous actions and strategies that can be implemented to improve the situation. Therefore, he does not agree with the statement completely.
In response to the interview, Biden took to X, previously known as Twitter, and wrote, “Not on my watch.”
In an unexpected moment during his recent address, Biden took a detour from his prepared speech to urge Republicans to safeguard Social Security and Medicare.
“We have two options ahead of us: Republicans can choose to reduce Social Security benefits and provide more tax breaks to the wealthy,” stated Biden. In response to the disapproving reactions from Republican lawmakers, he quipped, “Oh, really? You guys aren’t interested in another $2 trillion tax cut? I was under the impression that was part of your plan.”
During budget discussions last year, Republicans raised the issue of potential cuts to Social Security. The Republican Study Committee even released a proposed fiscal 2024 budget that included significant reductions to the program.
During that time, Trump strongly advised Republicans to abandon the proposal, emphasizing that they should not vote to reduce any funds from Medicare or Social Security.
