Trump pledges to prioritize the release of jailed Jan. 6 rioters as one of his initial actions

Former President Trump has stated that if he is reelected in November, one of his initial actions would be to release the rioters who were imprisoned for their involvement in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Trump declared his intentions as the next President. He stated, “My first acts will be to close the border, drill for energy resources, and secure the release of the January 6 hostages who are currently wrongfully imprisoned!” Trump’s statement reflects his strong stance on border control, energy exploration, and his concern for those involved in the January 6 incident.

Trump has shown consistent empathy towards the rioters who have been charged in relation to the events of January 6th. This was when his supporters engaged in violent clashes with law enforcement and forcefully entered the complex in an attempt to disrupt the certification of President Biden’s 2020 victory.

During a fundraiser organized for Jan. 6 defendants, the former president expressed his willingness to consider pardoning some of those charged in connection to the Capitol attack.

Former President Trump is currently facing federal charges in Washington, D.C. for his attempts to retain power following his loss in the 2020 election. Additionally, he is also facing charges in Georgia for his endeavors to overturn the state’s election results from the same year.

As of January 6, 2024, the Justice Department has reported over 1,200 defendants who are facing charges related to the attack on the Capitol. Out of these, more than 450 individuals have been charged specifically with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers or employees.

According to the Justice Department, over 700 individuals have admitted guilt to a range of federal charges.

In the coming days, it is anticipated that Trump will secure the Republican presidential nomination, paving the way for a rematch with President Biden in November.
