CEUFast utilized information from various sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to compile a list of the cities in America with the highest rates of depression.

The researchers examined several factors to determine the mental health status of the residents. These included the percentage of individuals who have been diagnosed with depression by a professional, the percentage of individuals who have experienced significant psychological distress within the last 30 days, the percentage of individuals who have had suicidal thoughts in the past year, the percentage of individuals who have used illegal drugs in the past month, and the percentage of individuals who have disabilities that restrict their daily activities.

The research also took into account the social and economic circumstances prevalent in each city, including the poverty rate, unemployment rate, median household income, educational attainment, crime rate, and accessibility of mental health care providers. Based on these factors, the study allocated a score to each city, with a higher score indicating a greater level of depression.

Why Springfield is so sad

The latest study reveals that Springfield, Massachusetts, has a depression score of 77.8, ranking as the 13th most depressed city in the United States.
