A man from Brooklyn who was punched by an NYPD officer in a viral video while being restrained by other officers has come forward to share new details about the incident. The incident has gained significant attention online and has raised concerns about police brutality.
Every time Mark Wyche, a father of three from Coney Island, watches the cellphone video, he is forced to relive the trauma.
In a recent interview with CBS News New York, Wyche expressed his dismay over the loss of all his possessions, stating, “They took away everything. I feel embarrassed and hurt.”
On the morning of July 5th, a video was captured following a Fourth of July barbecue held outside Wyche’s residence. The footage depicts numerous neighbors in attendance during the early hours of the day.
Cellphone footage captured an officer pushing Wyche before the physical altercation occurred.
According to Wyche’s lawyer, Robert Abruzzino, the individual who actively participates in community events and contributes significantly to the community was subjected to an unjustifiable and appalling assault.
“I didn’t realize what was happening”
According to the police, Wyche was pulled over for playing music too loudly from a portable speaker. Despite receiving multiple warnings to lower the volume, he did not comply.
Wyche expressed that all he wanted was his speaker, and it wasn’t until he was picked up off the ground that he understood the situation unfolding around him.
According to the police, Wyche had begun to behave erratically and refused to comply with the officers’ orders when they confiscated the speaker. He was reported to have become aggressive and resisted arrest before he was eventually taken into custody.
According to Abruzzino, the victim suffered serious physical harm, including injuries to his jaw and teeth. He is seeking compensation for these damages and wants the responsible officers to be held accountable.
According to Abruzzino, Wyche faced charges of obstructing governmental administration and creating unreasonable noise. However, he further added that a judge dismissed these charges.
“My whole life is in shambles right now”
In his spare time, Wyche, a school bus driver from New York City, takes it upon himself to teach the local kids how to play basketball. His motivation behind this is to provide them with an activity that will keep them away from the streets.
Wyche expressed the devastating impact the recent event has had on their life, stating that everything feels chaotic. They are struggling to work and often wake up in a sweat. The situation has taken a toll on their sleep and appetite, causing them to miss out on solid meals. The thought of their daughters having to go through this experience is particularly distressing.
