Texans’ Tank Dell returns to practice three weeks after being shot

Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell showed incredible resilience and determination as he made a triumphant return to the field for the team’s OTAs, just weeks after recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Despite the challenging circumstances, Dell’s unwavering spirit and dedication to his craft allowed him to overcome adversity and rejoin his teammates on the gridiron. His presence on the field serves as a true testament to his strength and passion for the game.

Dell suffered a minor gunshot wound during a private event in Sanford, Florida. The incident occurred on April 28 when a teenage gunman opened fire after an altercation, injuring 10 people. Fortunately, Dell’s injury was not severe, and he was able to be discharged from the hospital shortly after the shooting.

The Texans’ third-round pick for 2023 showcased his full potential during practice, engaging in individual drills, 7-on-7s, and 11-on-11s without any restrictions.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his happiness for Tank, who has returned to the field after going through a tragic situation. Ryans mentioned that the entire team is thrilled to have Tank back, doing what he loves the most – playing football. Seeing him running around and making plays like before brings joy to everyone, as Tank continues to be a dynamic player for the team.

In addition to the shooting incident, Dell had to overcome a broken leg he sustained during a December game against the Denver Broncos. Despite this setback, he managed to put up impressive numbers in his rookie season, accumulating 709 receiving yards and scoring seven touchdowns. His chemistry with Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud resulted in the duo recording the eighth-most passing yards among first-year quarterback and wide receiver pairs. Dell was on track to potentially reach 1,205 yards had it not been for his injury.

Nico Collins stepped up as the leader of the receiver group after Dell’s injury, putting up an impressive 1,297 receiving yards. He had multiple standout games with over 190 yards. To further strengthen their receiving corps, the Texans made a big move in the offseason, acquiring Stefon Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler, in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills.

With Collins and Diggs by his side, Stroud is set to lead a prolific passing attack, leading the Texans to have high hopes for a successful season.

According to Ryans, having receivers with diverse skill sets is crucial for causing problems for a defense. He explains that having different body types and types of movers allows the team to put defenses in difficult situations. The three receivers mentioned possess different abilities and can all contribute in their own ways. However, what makes them truly exceptional is their explosiveness and ability to finish plays with the football. Ryans emphasizes that their capability to win on third down and find the end zone sets them apart as great players.
