The Supreme Court has announced that it will release one or more opinions on Monday, just a day before the Super Tuesday primaries. This highly anticipated announcement is expected to address the contentious issue of states’ authority to exclude former President Donald Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
The court had not scheduled a public sitting for the reading and handing down of decisions in cases argued during the term, which is the traditional practice. As per the high court’s website, the justices will not be taking the bench.
The court announced that starting Monday, opinions will be released electronically.
In a recent development, the justices have engaged in expedited oral arguments regarding Trump’s appeal of a Colorado State Supreme Court ruling. The decision in question aims to prevent the former president from appearing on the 2024 ballot due to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Most of the justices at the time seemed very doubtful about Colorado’s authority to reject a candidate for federal office from the ballot by labeling them an “insurrectionist.”
The ruling in Trump v. Anderson is anticipated to be announced just a day before Colorado voters cast their ballots. Although Trump’s name is already listed on the ballot, the decision will have significant implications as it could determine the validity of votes for Trump and shed light on the Supreme Court’s interpretation of a longstanding constitutional provision that has been used to challenge Trump’s eligibility nationwide.
