Sheriff announces deputy attacked by two inmates while securing Henry County jail for the night

Late Wednesday night, a deputy inside the Henry County Jail was stabbed, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office to Channel 2 Action News.

Sheriff Reginald Scandrett informed Channel 2’s Tom Jones that while locking the jail for the night, two inmates attacked a deputy with homemade weapons. In response, the injured deputy swiftly employed a taser to subdue one of the fleeing inmates.

The deputy sustained minor injuries and was subsequently taken to the hospital. After receiving treatment, the deputy was released from medical care.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident. However, they have confirmed that inmates Dontavious Young and William Latham, who were involved in the attack on the deputy, will be charged with aggravated assault of a correctional officer, obstructing a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery, and unauthorized possession of weapons by inmates.

In a statement, Scandrett expressed his strong disapproval of such behavior, especially when it involves a violent act against staff members. He made it clear that he will not tolerate such actions and is determined to ensure that the inmates responsible are charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The HCSO has stated that there may be additional charges in the future.
