Several major retailers, including Target, Walmart, Lowe’s, and Dollar General, have recently made the decision to either remove or decrease the presence of self-checkouts in their stores.
One of the main issues that employees believe self-checkout systems cause is a multitude of problems for both customers and businesses. However, the most significant concern revolves around theft.
According to a recent survey conducted by Lending Tree, it was discovered that approximately one in seven individuals confessed to intentionally stealing items while using self-checkout.
Additionally, the survey revealed that one in five shoppers reported accidentally stealing items during the self-checkout process. According to Business Insider, shoppers are 21 times more likely to sneak items past machines than human cashiers.
Dollar General Removing Self-Checkout Machines
Dollar General has officially announced that it will be increasing the number of staff members at its checkout areas while simultaneously reducing the presence of self-checkout options.
“In certain stores, self-checkout has indeed made shopping more convenient for our customers,” emphasized Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos during the company’s quarterly earnings call. However, he stressed that the presence of friendly and helpful employees is still crucial. They play a vital role in welcoming customers and providing assistance during the checkout process.

According to Vasos, there has been an excessive dependence on self-checkout in stores this year. He believes that self-checkout should be used as a secondary option, rather than the primary method of checkout.
