Police searching for suspect in reported arson at Vermont office of Senator Bernie Sanders

Police are currently searching for a suspect in connection with an alleged arson incident at the Burlington office of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

A fire broke out at 10:45 a.m. ET on Friday in the vestibule between the elevator and the entrance door to Sanders’ office. The office is situated on the third floor of 1 Church St., according to authorities.

According to the Burlington Police Department, a man entered the vestibule of the senator’s office and proceeded to spray an apparent accelerant on the door. After igniting the accelerant, the individual quickly fled the scene.

According to a statement from the Burlington Police Department, a fire broke out at the door and part of the vestibule, making it difficult for staff members to exit the office and putting their lives in danger.

The fire in the senator’s office was mostly put out by the sprinkler system, according to the police. They mentioned that the fire caused “moderate” damage to the door of the office, while the floors below, including the third floor, experienced “significant” water damage.

According to the police, no injuries have been reported and Sanders was not present at the time of the incident.

According to a press release by the Burlington Fire Department, the fire has been determined to be incendiary by the Burlington Fire Marshal’s office.

Burlington police are currently searching for a male suspect involved in the incident. They have released surveillance stills of the unknown individual.

The police are currently unsure of the motive behind the incident, according to authorities. A joint investigation is being conducted by the Vermont State Police and the Burlington Police Department.

Kathryn Van Haste, the Vermont state director for Sanders’ office, expressed gratitude towards the police and fire crews who responded to the situation.

In a statement, Van Haste expressed relief that none of their staff or anyone in the building had been harmed.

The U.S. Capitol Police and the Senate Sergeant at Arms are collaborating closely with local first responders, ensuring a seamless coordination.
