In the upcoming days, the subway system of New York City will receive the new weapons detection technology, as announced by Mayor Eric Adams.
The city has been exploring the possibility of utilizing technology that can detect firearms using the MTA’s current camera systems.
In March, the initial announcement of this pilot program was made, which marks the initial phase of the entire process.
To track the impact of the new system on normal commuter flow, the city plans to install freestanding screeners that can detect firearms. The initial stations to use these screeners have not yet been determined.
Evolv Technology’s weapons detection system, which is already being utilized at Citi Field, is now being employed by the city.
Adams expressed his admiration for the successful outcome of thousands of tests conducted. “We are highly impressed with the results,” he said. “Abiding by the City Council’s regulations on the deployment of these tests was of utmost importance to us.”
Mayor Adams and MTA officials made an announcement on Wednesday that the incidence of subway crime in the city has been on a downward trend.
According to the latest data released by the NYPD, subway crime has decreased by almost 8% in the first six months of 2024 when compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
According to Adams, the decrease in crime can be attributed to the presence of more police officers who are actively addressing quality-of-life concerns and taking proactive measures to prevent violence.
