Mocobizscene- According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, a man’s death on Tuesday may be connected to the consumption of a mislabeled cookie from Stew Leonard’s.
According to the DPH, a man in his 20s from New York consumed a Florentine cookie at a social event in Connecticut and became the victim.
The public is being warned by the Department of Public Health (DPH) about the cookies sold at Stew Leonard’s grocery stores in Danbury and Newington after the Food and Drug Administration was notified of a death related to these cookies.
The labels on the cookies did not provide a proper listing of ingredients, including peanuts.
According to Dr. Manisha Juthani, the Commissioner of the Department of Public Health (DPH), ensuring proper labeling is crucial for individuals with food allergies to safeguard themselves effectively. Upon learning about this incident, Dr. Juthani expressed her distress and emphasized the need to collaborate with partners to protect people with food allergies. She highlighted the significance of raising awareness about food allergies to prevent such avoidable tragedies from occurring in the future.
Stew Leonard’s has recently issued a recall for their cookies due to the presence of peanuts, an ingredient not mentioned by the manufacturer.
Cookies United, located in Islip, New York, crafted the delectable Florentine Cookies exclusively for Stew Leonard’s stores in Danbury and Newington. Cookies United expressed their condolences to the customer’s family involved in the incident at Stew Leonard’s.
The company made it clear that the mislabeling was not their fault, but rather the responsibility of Stew Leonard’s.
According to a previous press release by Stew Leonard’s, they stated that the cookies contained peanuts, which was an ingredient that the manufacturer did not disclose to them. However, it is important to note that Stew Leonard’s was actually informed by Cookies United in July of 2023 that the product now contains peanuts. As a result, all products shipped to them were labeled accordingly. It is worth mentioning that this particular product is sold under the Stew Leonard’s brand and is repackaged at their facilities. The incorrect label was created and applied to their product by Stew Leonard’s themselves.
The cookies that were recalled were sold during the seasonal period from November 6 to December 31, 2023, and had a best before date of January 5, 2024.
As a precautionary measure, DCP collaborated with Stew Leonard’s to remove all baked goods made by Cookies United from their Connecticut stores.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a statement advising individuals with a nut allergy to promptly discard the cookies or return them to the place of purchase. In case of any adverse reactions, immediate medical assistance is recommended.
The DCP is currently investigating to ascertain the cause of the error.
