New Jersey Man Imprisoned for Racial Slurs on Black Neighbours

A Videotaped incident in 2021 of Edward C. Mathews, a white man from New Jersey, harassing his African American neighbors and using racial obscenities has resulted in his eight-year prison sentence. With the intent to distribute, Mathews pleaded guilty to four counts of bias intimidation and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. A minimum of four years of service is required prior to his eligibility for parole.

The charges are in connection with an occurrence in which Mathews was observed insulting his neighbors with ethnic slurs. Additionally, he faced charges of stalking, vandalizing the vehicles of his neighbors, and smearing excrement on their windows.

Police discovered a substantial quantity of psilocin mushrooms, a hallucinogenic compound, during a search of Mathews’ residence.  Mathews, who has been detained since his apprehension, will be granted parole eligibility in approximately 16 months, with credit granted for time already served. He expressed remorse for his conduct throughout the sentencing process.
