Mother who lost three children in five years also loses daughter in Trenton hit-and-run

Shydasia Merrick is the third child that Toshawn West has lost, following the passing of her first-born, Nuna, and second-born, Nyshirah.

As reported by Daily Voice, a hit-and-run driver fatally struck Merrick, who was 26 years old, at around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 1.

As of Monday, June 10, West’s personal GoFundMe campaign has amassed over $2,900 in donations.

“It has been a difficult journey for me, having lost two of my other children over the years. Mentally, I am struggling to keep myself composed, and it has been anything but easy,” shares the author. She further reveals that in 2022, she became the sole caregiver of her grandchild, Nyshirah’s child.

“I am currently responsible for the care of my only surviving child, Lenay, who is 13 years old. It has been a financial struggle to provide for her needs. The loss of my three children was an unexpected tragedy that no one can be fully prepared for. Coping with the reality of losing not just one, but three children has left my heart open and shattered.”

The search for the vehicle that hit Merrick is still ongoing, with the police taking charge. Specifically, they are looking for a white 2019-2024 Toyota Rav4, which could be an XLE or a higher trim model. The car is expected to have suffered damage on the driver’s side, including the sideview mirror and headlight assembly. It also has a sunroof and color-keyed mirrors.

The Hughes Funeral Home in Trenton will host a funeral service for Merrick on Friday, June 14 at 1 p.m. Attendees may pay their respects during the calling hour from noon until the start of the service. Following the funeral, Merrick will be laid to rest at Ewing Cemetery.
