Mississippi veterans receive patriotic quilts as a gesture of gratitude

Memorial Day, a federal holiday to honor and mourn the men and women who died serving the United States, is fast approaching. This year, it will be observed on Monday, May 27, 2024.

Thursday was a momentous day as a special ceremony was held to pay tribute to those who returned from their noble service.

The Jackson Quilters Guild generously filled the table at Briarwood Presbyterian Church with patriotic quilts. These beautiful quilts were donated to support the mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which aims to provide comfort and healing to members and veterans affected by war.

Neil Davis, a U.S. Army veteran, expressed his deep appreciation for quilts, having grown up in a community of quilters. He recognized the immense effort and love put into creating these quilts, which he likened to being wrapped in warmth and comfort. Davis also highlighted the quilt guild’s embrace and warm welcome, making him feel at home once again. The sentiment behind these quilts holds great significance for him.

Ray Thomas, a Vietnam veteran, experienced a profound sense of acceptance that enveloped him like a comforting quilt.

Thomas reflected on the challenges faced by veterans who served in Vietnam, acknowledging that there was a lack of acceptance for them during that time. He expressed how difficult it was for them, as they were not embraced as they deserved to be. However, he also acknowledged that things have changed now, and veterans are more accepted in society.
