Mississippi receives a visit from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg

During a two-day tour of projects in Mississippi, the U.S. Transportation Secretary was able to gain insight into the state’s needs. Recently, the Secretary visited the state to observe ongoing projects and assess the transportation requirements of Mississippi. This tour is part of a larger effort by the Department of Transportation to improve transportation infrastructure across the country. The Secretary’s visit to Mississippi will help to identify areas where the state requires additional funding and support to improve its transportation system.

During his trip to Mississippi, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg made a stop at the Medgar Evers Home Museum. This marked his first visit to the state.

It may seem odd that the transportation secretary was visiting a house instead of inspecting a road. However, he provided some context to explain his actions.

According to Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the reason behind their work is rooted in the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. He emphasized that transportation plays a significant role in achieving equality, and it has always been a crucial aspect of the fight for civil rights and economic justice. Buttigieg acknowledged that transportation has been a battleground for these struggles, and it remains a core commitment to this day.

During the groundbreaking ceremony for the $20 million project aimed at reconstructing a mile-and-a-half stretch of Medgar Evers Boulevard in Jackson, he participated actively.

According to Congressman Bennie Thompson, the funding for it is sourced from the national infrastructure package.

Thompson emphasized that the Reconnect initiative presents a chance to revamp and improve the area, addressing any issues that may currently make people feel uncomfortable passing through. “It’s an opportunity to redo it, resurface it, fix all of the problems associated with it,” he said. This way, the hope is that people will feel more at ease navigating through the area.

During his visit, Buttigieg made sure to explore various areas of the Delta, which included a stop at the Port of Rosedale.

According to Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons, the secretary is akin to Santa Claus when he brings in the much-needed funds. Simmons expressed his gratitude for the secretary’s willingness to visit Mississippi and spend time there.

During his initial visit to the state, we asked Buttigieg what left an impression on him.

“He described his motivation for making these investments and ensuring they reach smaller communities, rural communities, communities of color, and places that were historically left out, stating that he sees a significant need in these areas.”

According to the secretary, every project in Mississippi that is receiving federal funding from this package shares a common thread. These projects are all initiated by communities that have a deep understanding of their needs and are now receiving the necessary funding to turn their visions into realities.
