Michigan Statehouse control shifts back to Democrats following successful special election campaign

According to Decision Desk HQ, Democratic candidates Peter Herzberg and Mai Xiong are expected to emerge victorious in their respective special elections for two Michigan state House races. This triumph will allow the Democratic Party to regain complete control over the state Legislature.

Xiong emerged victorious in District 13, encompassing areas of Detroit, Center Line, and Warren in Macomb and Wayne counties, by defeating Republican candidate Ronald Singer. This news comes from the Detroit Free Press.

Herzberg emerged victorious in District 25, encompassing areas of Wayne, Canton, and Westland in Wayne County, by defeating Republican candidate Josh Powell, as reported by the news outlet.

Xiong, a former refugee from Thailand, brings valuable experience to the table. His most recent role was serving on the Macomb County board of commissioners. On the other hand, Herzberg comes from a background in public service, having been a member of the Westland City Council. These individuals have proven their dedication to their communities and are well-equipped to make a positive impact.

Former state Representatives Kevin Coleman (D) and Lori Stone (D) stepped down from their positions after Coleman won the mayoral election in Westland and Stone became the mayor of Warren. This resulted in a 54-54 split in partisan control within the House, as reported by The Associated Press.

Herzberg and Xiong were successful in securing wins, which ultimately helped restore the Democratic advantage in the state House.

In a statement shared through the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), Xiong expressed gratitude for the immense support from the voters of the 13th House District, who have elected him as their State Representative. Xiong emphasized the significance of Michigan in his life, describing it as a source of hope for him and his family.

DLCC President Heather Williams praised the win, stating that it serves as a shining example of what can be accomplished with a Democratic majority. She specifically highlighted the state’s achievements in improving healthcare access and implementing measures to address gun violence.

According to the Democratic Party representative, the elections held tonight served as a clear indication of the voters’ support for the progressive agenda of Michigan’s Democratic trifecta. She expressed that the results reflect the desire of the voters to see the Democrats continue their efforts in moving the state forward.

Speaker Joe Tate and the Democratic majority’s wins tonight will allow them to build on the important progress Democrats have made in Michigan. We have the momentum on our side, not only in Michigan but also across the country. The DLCC is fully committed to making 2024 the year of the states.
