Miami Beach police arrested alleged ‘Spider-Man’ burglar accused of climbing high-rise building

Mocobizscene- In Miami Beach, Florida, authorities have apprehended a skilled and elusive thief nicknamed “Spider-Man.” The suspect used his agility and stealth to scale the side of a building at The Alexander Hotel All Suite Oceanfront Resort. In a daring act, he successfully broke into five different units. However, his criminal endeavors have now come to an end as he is now in police custody.

A 34-year-old man named Anthony Butler, residing in northwest Miami-Dade, has been arrested by the Miami Beach Police Department. He is now facing charges of burglary to an occupied dwelling and grand theft, as stated in the arrest report.

Chanie Brisk, one of the victims whose jewelry was stolen, expressed her astonishment, saying, “We didn’t hear a thing, and I’m usually a light sleeper.”

According to Mayer Greenbaum, the thief not only took his wallet but also stole the jewelry belonging to his daughter and wife. Greenbaum believed that they were secure on the ninth floor of the 18th-floor high-rise situated at 5225 Collins Ave. in Mid-Beach.

Witnesses have stated that there is a video that captures the burglar moving from one balcony to another. However, Miami Beach detectives have not yet made the video public. According to Local 10 News, Bernie Fuchs shared that the thief not only emptied out all the cash but also stole his prized gold watch from his room.

According to investigators, Butler carried out all the reported incidents in a similar manner. He would climb the rear portion of the building and move from balcony to balcony, searching for unlocked sliding glass doors to gain entry.

Police observed Butler driving a 2023 Toyota Camry and heading west on Interstate 95 after he sold a stolen gold watch. They were able to gather this information by utilizing various law enforcement databases, including license plate readers and surveillance videos.

While keeping a close watch on Butler’s residence, situated at 300 Northwest 84th Street in the unincorporated West Little River area, law enforcement observed him strolling near his front door. They promptly instructed him to get down on the ground under the threat of their firearms.

After apprehending Butler without any trouble, the officers proceeded to have a conversation with his girlfriend, who lived with him.

According to the police, she willingly allowed them to search her house. During the search, they found Butler’s brown Polo slides, which they gathered as evidence. Authorities later verified that the shoe impression on one of the balconies at the Alexander Hotel matched the shoe prints on the slides.

According to Butler’s arrest report, he willingly waived his rights and provided a comprehensive confession to the crimes when speaking to detectives. Authorities claim that Butler has had previous encounters with the law, and January’s incident is not his first.

According to jail records, he is also facing extra charges for burglarizing an occupied dwelling, committing grand theft, providing false verification to a pawn broker, and dealing in stolen property. These charges stem from two separate incidents that occurred last month.

As of Tuesday morning, his bond for all three cases amounted to $27,500. In 2019, Terry Person, who was then 28 years old, gained the nickname “Spider-Man burglar” after a string of burglaries at The Alexander in Miami Beach.  Kevin Glen Jones, who was 32 years old at the time, was apprehended by detectives in 2018 for his involvement in the theft of numerous items from multiple high-rise apartments in Australia.
