Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell has recently formed a task force to address the increase in shootings occurring within the city.
The Violent Crime Task Force comprises dedicated Federal Way police officers who strive to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of crimes.
In recent weeks, tragic shootings took place in Federal Way, claiming the life of a two-year-old and injuring a man in close proximity to Pacific Highway. Additionally, another incident occurred at a nearby apartment complex, leaving a teenager wounded.
“Our topmost concern at the City of Federal Way is ensuring the safety of our community,” stated Ferrell in a news release. “We will spare no effort and utilize all available resources to apprehend the individual responsible for the tragic murder of the two-year-old near IHOP, as well as to identify and bring to justice those involved in violent crimes within our community.”
According to data shared with The Center Square, Federal Way has already experienced four homicides, 66 cases of aggravated assault, and 38 robberies this year. In comparison, last year saw 11 homicides, 343 cases of aggravated assault, and 238 robberies.
According to crime statistics, two out of the four homicides have occurred within the past 30 days.

The task force, led by Deputy Chief of Police Kyle Sumpter of Federal Way, is dedicated to gathering crucial information about suspects involved in violent crimes and identifying their connections.
“We are committed to utilizing forensic evidence and other investigative methods to solve cases and ensure that violent offenders are brought to justice,” stated Sumpter. “Our team is dedicated to working tirelessly, day and night, in order to safeguard the well-being of the individuals and families residing in Federal Way.”
