Mocobizscene-Maryland will see an increase in its minimum wage in the new year. Maryland will be increasing its minimum wage to $15 an hour starting January 1, 2024.
Effective January 1st, all businesses operating in the state must ensure that their minimum wage employees receive a minimum hourly pay of $15.
Some local counties have already been paying their employees $15 an hour, even exceeding the minimum wage requirement set by the state. For instance, in Montgomery County, the minimum wage for large companies is $16.70 an hour. However, with the new state law coming into effect on January 1, companies with 10 or fewer employees must raise their minimum wage from $14.50 to $15.
In 2019, Maryland became the sixth state to pass legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15. However, the implementation of this increase was initially scheduled for 2025.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore accelerated the timeline to 2024 as he officially enacted the Fair Wage Act of 2023 on April 11, 2023.
Tipped workers, on the other hand, will still be entitled to $3.63 per hour if they earn more than $30 in tips per month.
