A man who carjacked an SUV at gunpoint in Treme has been sentenced to nearly 19 years in prison by a federal judge.
Furrell Johnson, a 33-year-old, admitted his guilt earlier this year for committing the crime on October 13, 2022, in the 1200 block of St. Philip Street, near Armstrong Park.
According to the U.S. attorney’s office, the victim had just finished returning to his parked vehicle, keys in hand, when Johnson swiftly grabbed the keys. He then proceeded to pull out a gun from his waistband and swiftly made his escape in the SUV.
Johnson was caught on surveillance video selling a tablet computer from his vehicle at a local gasoline station. Following this, investigators presented a lineup to the carjacking victim, who positively identified Johnson from a photo.
U.S. District Judge Lance Africk, appointed to the court by President George W. Bush, has sentenced Johnson to 71 months for the carjacking charge. Additionally, Johnson will serve 156 months for using a firearm during the crime. After completing his prison sentence, Johnson will be required to undergo five years of supervised release.
