Lawsuit Filed by Texas Parents Against School District for Altering Grades

The superintendent is facing a lawsuit from two mothers who claim that he tampered with their children’s grades.

Marlin Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Darryl Henson is facing a lawsuit filed by Monica Johnson and Brandolyn Jones. The lawsuit accuses Henson of tampering with their children’s academic records. Me’Kia Mouling, Johnson’s daughter, graduated from Marlin High School in 2023 and is now attending Texas A&M University. Johnson alleges that Henson’s modifications to her daughter’s grades resulted in her being tied for valedictorian. Similarly, Jones, the mother of Praiyer and Addai Jones, claims that not only were her children’s grades altered, but also that one of her child’s long-time teachers was replaced with a deceased person, according to The Daily Mail.

Jones has taken her youngest child out of school after alleging dishonest behavior, while Johnson’s son remains enrolled at Marlin High School. According to KKXV, Johnson stated, “We’re suing him, it’s harassment. Every day, I’m terrified of what he is going to do. I check weekly just so I can keep up with it – I don’t feel like I should have to do that.” Johnson also claimed that Henson had adjusted her daughter Me’kia’s grades just before graduation, although he eventually changed them back. This caused Me’kia to tie with another student for the position of valedictorian.

According to Johnson, her son’s class ranking at Marlin High School has taken a significant hit, dropping from 13th to 24th. She believes that this is a result of retaliation from the school’s administration due to her ongoing lawsuit. Johnson expressed her frustration and concern, stating that not only does she feel retaliated against, but she also feels that the situation has escalated to harassment, especially given that her son still attends the school.

At the start of the year, Henson found herself facing a lawsuit from two mothers who alleged First Amendment retaliation among other claims. Seeking damages exceeding $1 million, the lawsuit is not the first time the school district has been embroiled in controversy. Back in 2023, Henson had announced the postponement of Marlin High School’s graduation ceremony due to a significant number of seniors failing to meet the required grades and attendance. The ceremony was rescheduled to June to allow students ample time to catch up and fulfill diploma requirements.
