As the Fourth of July holiday and long weekend approaches, police departments throughout New York State are ramping up efforts to combat drunk driving. The crackdown on this dangerous behavior is in full swing, as law enforcement agencies work diligently to keep motorists safe on the roads.
Starting Wednesday and running through Sunday, July 7th, the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign will be in full swing. Motorists can anticipate an increase in police presence and DWI checkpoints on the roads during this period.
Monroe County STOP-DWI Coordinator Lindsay Tomidy revealed that over the course of four Independence Day weekends, 308 individuals were injured and 4 lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents on Monroe County roadways. Tomidy further explained that a significant number of these accidents were a direct result of impaired drivers making reckless decisions. Tomidy emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that even one life lost is too many.
During last year’s Fourth of July STOP-DWI campaign, state police issued nearly 13,000 tickets. The holiday weekend saw 193 people arrested for DWI, alongside the investigation of 158 personal injury crashes and five fatalities.
