Gwinnett Co. church incurs $15K worth of damage and loses air conditioning units due to hit-and-run collision

The pastor of a Gwinnett County church reported a hit-and-run crash that caused over $15,000 in damages and destroyed several air conditioning units.

Rev. Dr. Nora Colmenares from The Nett Church expressed her desire to uncover some answers regarding the incident, stating to Channel 2’s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson that, “You would have to be going really fast to do all the damage.”

According to the Gwinnett County Police, a row of air conditioning units at the back of the building was damaged last Thursday at approximately 3 pm. The impact destroyed three units and caused damage to two others.

According to investigators, the driver departed from the location without informing anyone.

At the location on Jimmy Carter Blvd, officers discovered a front grille from a vehicle, but no details have been released regarding the description of the vehicle.

Dr. Colmenares expressed his frustration and disbelief at the unusual occurrence that happened in broad daylight, stating, “It’s a little bit frustrating. It’s very weird for something like this to happen in the middle of the afternoon.”

The repairs have turned out to be quite expensive and the police are currently investigating in order to locate the driver responsible.

Dr. Colmenares stated that the cost of replacing the three units amounted to about $15,000.

At the Jimmy Carter Blvd location of the Nett Church, homeless families can utilize an assessment center to obtain necessary services and recommendations for housing.

The building experienced significant damage in 2022 due to pipes bursting caused by a winter freeze.

Dr. Colmenares stated that the church previously received coverage from its insurance for the damage, however, the upcoming repairs will need to be funded out of their own pocket.
